Rod learnt a lot from his father who taught him to be hands on with horses and to be patient with them to maximise their potential. Rod is a big believer in giving his horses time to mature and to take the time that each one needs as they all learn and come on at different stages. Rod loves training in Newcastle but also has a farm called Twin Gables in the horse’s paradise Scone where he does all of his spelling and pre training.

Being based in Scone it enables Rod to target the many number of surrounding provincial tracks but it’s also a short drive to the Sydney metropolitan tracks. Rod will also travel his horses interstate if the right opportunities come up such as Spuruson who Rod took to Qld to win the Grand prix Stakes.

Rod Ollerton was strongly influenced by his father but he also has a wealth of experience after spending a significant amount of time with John Hawkes and the Snowden family. Rodney loves winning races, however it is the process to get to that point is what gets him out of bed each day.

He loves watching horses develop and coming along in their preparations and is excited when a new horse enters the stable and he has the job of working it out to ensure its maximum potential. Rod especially enjoys the challenge of working out troublesome horses and watching them develop into serious horses.

Rod is just a true horse man, he is honest and very hands on. While some other trainers will be watching on from the sidelines Rod is up riding every horse in the stable to make sure he is across absolutely everything.

Rod has great patience and lets the horse tell him where they are at in their preparation. This type of insight is what a new owner can expect when they have a horse with Ollerton Racing.
